The first The War Z map was called Colorado. It included many urban and city environments for players to explore and survive the dangers posed by hordes of the undead as well as other survivors. In the 12/4/2013 patch, a new map dubbed Colorado V2 was officially released on all servers. This map included updated lighting, item spawns, a much larger traversable surface area, and a variety of new buildings dotting the map.
The War Z features many urban and city environments in which players struggle to survive from the unending horde of the undead. Cities feature high-rises and skyscrapers whose upper levels may or may not be accessible to players.
In smaller towns, urban environments are present, as well as commercial businesses, strip malls, and other countryside buildings.
